Long stitch binding guide for zines
Long stitch binding sews folded signatures directly through a cover, leaving graphic lengths of thread visible on the spine. It is a practical structure for multi-section zines with a handmade identity.
How long stitch binding works
Each signature is pierced through its fold, while corresponding slots or holes are cut into the cover. Thread passes through the signature and cover to create the exposed vertical pattern.
The page file is imposed in signatures rather than as one large nested booklet, which controls creep and lets the publication grow thicker.
When it is a good fit
Use long stitch for journals, portfolios and art editions that need several signatures without boards or adhesive.
It opens generously and makes the sewing pattern a deliberate part of the cover design.
What to watch before printing
The cover carries the sewing tension, so very soft or fragile stock may tear around the slots. Reinforce or select the cover accordingly.
Calculate signature thickness and spine spacing before punching; crowded sections cause the fore-edge to swell.
