How folded sections work in a longer zine
A signature is a group of sheets folded together into one section before binding. If you have only ever made small stapled zines, this can sound abstract, but it becomes practical the moment one pile of pages gets too thick to fold, staple, trim, or open cleanly as a single unit.

Start with sheets, not pages
One physical sheet becomes multiple booklet pages after it is printed on both sides and folded. In a simple saddle-stitched booklet, each folded sheet contributes four finished pages.
A signature is just a batch of those folded sheets gathered together as one section. A tiny zine might have one signature. A thicker book might have three, four, or ten signatures sewn or gathered side by side.
That is why signatures are not just a binding term. They change how you count sheets, how you plan imposition, and how thick each sewn or stapled unit can safely become.
Why signatures become necessary
A single folded stack works well up to a point. But as page count and paper thickness increase, the fold gets bulky, staples struggle to clinch, inner pages push outward, and the booklet opens less cleanly.
Breaking the book into smaller signatures keeps each section manageable. You still get the total page count you want, but the physical structure is easier to sew, trim, and handle.
This is why section-sewn, Coptic, case-bound, and other larger book structures rely on signatures instead of trying to treat the whole book as one folded lump.
How signature size changes imposition
Imposition happens inside each signature, not just across the full book. If you split a 96-page project into three 32-page signatures, each 32-page block gets its own nested page-order logic.
That matters because the outer pages of one signature never swap places with another signature. Each section has its own first spread, center spread, and final spread.
So choosing a signature size is not only a manufacturing decision. It also determines how many folded sheets live inside each imposed unit.

The exact limit depends on paper thickness and binding method, but this comparison shows the planning difference clearly.

The total page count is unchanged. What changes is the number of sheets inside each folded unit, which affects creep, fastening, trimming, and how comfortably the book opens.
Common mistakes
Treating signatures as just a fancy word for chapters
A chapter is a content division. A signature is a physical folded section. Sometimes they align, but they are not the same thing.
Counting pages without counting sheets
In folded structures, sheet count is what determines thickness and handling. Two books with the same page count can behave differently if the paper stock changes.
Assuming every binding uses signatures
Japanese stab, perfect binding, accordion, and other flat or sequential structures do not all use nested folded signatures in the same way. The binding method matters.
Use signatures when the book outgrows one folded stack
