Photography zines

How to make a photography zine, from edit to printed object

A photography zine is a deliberately edited and sequenced body of images made for a physical reading experience. Build it by deciding the idea, sequence and binding before final layout, then proof the entire object, not isolated pages.

Workflow

The complete workflow

01

Select

Define the idea, then edit for the project rather than collecting every strong photograph.

02

Sequence

Arrange lightweight previews as spreads, page turns, pauses, chapters and an ending.

03

Size and paper

Choose dimensions and stock together so image scale, opacity, grain and printer limits agree.

04

Bind

Select the opening behavior and page structure before the final document is built.

05

Layout

Carry the approved sequence into Affinity Publisher or InDesign and relink the originals.

06

Impose

Convert reader order into the sheet order required by the chosen binding and printer.

07

Proof

Test color, scale, duplex orientation, margins, folds and one complete physical copy.

08

Print and bind

Inspect every sheet, assemble consistently and record the specification for the edition.
